What does a state insurance department do?
Each state runs its own insurance department that licenses the agents and carriers doing business there, reviews and approves the annuity and life insurance products sold in that state, and handles the formal complaint process when a consumer and a company cannot resolve a dispute on their own. If you want to confirm that an agent or a carrier is properly licensed where you live, or a claim, surrender or service issue is not getting resolved, your state department is the office to contact. Below is contact information for all 50 states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories.
Why you would contact your state insurance department
Four situations come up most often.
- Confirming a license. Every state lets consumers check whether a specific agent or carrier is licensed to sell there. We hold licenses in 47 states, and our license numbers are published so you can verify us the same way.
- Filing a complaint. If a carrier delays a surrender, denies a claim it should pay, or you believe a product was misrepresented to you, the department accepts the complaint and requires the company to respond formally.
- Checking a product filing. Annuity contracts are approved on a state-by-state basis, so a feature or a surrender schedule you saw in a brochure from another state may not match what is actually filed and available where you live.
- Understanding the safety net. Your state insurance department is separate from your state guaranty association.
