What Is a General Account? Annuity Glossary

Your fixed annuity premium does not sit in a vault. It joins a much larger pool the insurer manages. Here is where that money goes and why it matters to you.

The general account is the pool of assets an insurance company invests premiums into for its fixed annuities and MYGAs, and it is what stands behind your guaranteed rate.

What is a general account?

Every dollar you pay into a fixed annuity or MYGA lands in the insurer's general account, a pool of assets that sits directly on the company's own balance sheet. That sets it apart from the separate account used for variable annuities, which is walled off from the insurer's other obligations and tied to the performance of the investments inside it.

Where your premium goes

Once your premium reaches the general account, the carrier puts it to work, mostly in a mix of government securities, mortgage-backed bonds, investment-grade corporate debt and other fixed-income holdings built to match long-dated obligations like yours. The insurer keeps a portion of whatever it earns on those investments and credits the rest to you as your contract's rate. Insurers refer to the gap between what they earn and what they pass on to you as the spread, and that gap is the core of how a fixed annuity carrier turns a profit.

Why the general account matters to you

Because your contract is a claim on the general account rather than a separately held account of your own, your guarantee is only as strong as the insurer standing behind it. Should that insurer run into serious trouble, your state's guaranty association steps in as a second layer of protection, typically covering annuity values up to $250,000 or more depending on where you live. That backstop is real, but it is not a reason to skip checking a carrier's AM Best rating before you buy, since the general account structure is exactly why financial strength ratings carry so much weight when you compare annuities.

Two carriers can offer the same headline rate on paper and still carry very different risk, depending on how conservatively each one manages its general account and how strong its overall balance sheet is. Comparing ratings side by side, not just rates, is part of doing this right.

Frequently asked questions

What is a general account?

It is the shared pool of assets an insurer invests fixed annuity and MYGA premiums into, sitting on the insurer's own balance sheet rather than in a separate investment account.

Where does my premium actually go?

Your money is invested mainly in investment-grade corporate bonds, government securities, mortgage-backed securities and similar fixed-income holdings, and the carrier passes along part of what it earns as your credited rate.

Why should I care about the general account?

Because your guarantee rides on the insurer's overall financial strength, not a segregated pot of your own money, which is exactly why AM Best ratings and state guaranty limits matter before you buy.
