Annuity company review

Allianz Life Annuity Review (2026)

A German-owned carrier that has sold annuities in the U.S. since 1896 and now leads the fixed index annuity market. Here is how strong it is, what it sells, and one chapter of its history worth knowing before you buy.

Our take

Is Allianz Life a good annuity company?

Yes, for buyers who want a large, globally backed carrier with a deep fixed index annuity lineup. AM Best grades Allianz Life A+, its Superior tier, while S&P puts the same company one step higher at AA. Its parent, Munich-based Allianz SE, ranks among the largest insurance and asset management groups in the world by revenue, and Allianz Life itself has ranked among the top sellers of fixed index annuities in the country for years running. The tradeoff to know: Allianz builds feature-rich fixed index annuities with income riders rather than plain fixed-rate MYGAs, so it suits income planning better than a search for the single highest guaranteed rate. If a straightforward locked rate is all you want, compare it against MYGA carriers first.

Allianz Life's customer service and online access

Allianz Life policyholders manage their annuity at allianzlife.com through the company's online login, where you can review your contract's current value and update account details. Because Allianz sells both fixed and variable products, it runs separate phone lines for each: one line for fixed annuities, life insurance and long-term care questions, a second line dedicated to variable annuities, and a third for general website and login support. All three are staffed Monday through Friday. Licensed producers who represent Allianz clients call yet another dedicated line, separate from either consumer number.

Where Allianz Life's financial strength comes from

Rating agencyRatingWhat it means
AM BestA+Superior
S&P GlobalAAVery strong
Moody'sAa3Strong
FitchNot rated

AM Best places Allianz Life in its Superior tier, one notch below the agency's top grade, based on a review of the company's balance sheet, its operating results and the overall shape of its business. S&P goes a step further with its own AA grade, its second-highest rating band, putting Allianz among the more strongly rated insurers doing business in the United States. Moody's Aa3 rating points the same direction.

Behind all three grades stands Allianz SE, the Munich-based parent and one of the largest financial services companies in the world measured by revenue. Allianz Life itself has done business in the United States since 1896 and has carried its current tier of ratings through more than one full economic cycle without a material downgrade.

Ratings can still move, so it is worth confirming the current grade directly on AM Best's site before you buy rather than relying on an older review. Your state's guaranty association also stands behind the contract as a second layer of protection, typically up to $250,000 for annuity values, though the exact limit and the products it covers are set state by state. Treat that backstop as a safety net, not as a substitute for checking the carrier's own rating first.

Allianz Life's history, and a lawsuit worth knowing about

Allianz Life's American roots go back to 1896, and the company became part of Germany's Allianz SE in 1979. Over the following decades, and especially through the 1990s and 2000s, it built the dominant fixed index annuity franchise it still holds today; no other U.S. carrier currently sells more FIAs.

That history includes an episode many carrier write-ups leave out entirely. A California class action known as Negrete v. Allianz Life was brought on behalf of roughly 238,000 older annuity buyers, who alleged the company had marketed deferred and bonus-style annuities using upfront bonus features that were, in the plaintiffs' telling, misleading. Allianz denied any wrongdoing, but the case eventually resolved with the company setting aside $251 million to settle the claims, an outcome a federal judge signed off on back in 2015.

We include this because the underlying lesson has not expired. The case itself is well over a decade old now, and both Allianz specifically and the broader annuity industry have since tightened senior-suitability rules and disclosure requirements considerably. Nothing about Allianz's current financial strength is in doubt. Still, the episode is a permanent, useful reminder: on any indexed annuity, read the bonus structure, the caps, the participation rate and the surrender schedule closely before you sign, regardless of how well-known or well-capitalized the carrier behind it happens to be.

What annuities does Allianz Life sell?

Allianz Life's business is built almost entirely around fixed index annuities, and its current shelf includes the Allianz 222, Allianz 360, Core Income 7 and Benefit Control contracts. The company also sells variable annuities. It does not currently offer a standard MYGA through independent agents, so buyers who want one simple locked rate, rather than an index-linked product with riders, should compare MYGA-focused carriers separately.

Allianz Life's fixed index annuity lineup

Allianz 222

A long-term FIA built around a two-year point-to-point crediting method, paired with an optional income rider. The 222's premium bonus and interest bonus both credit to a separate figure called the Protected Income Value rather than to the account value you could otherwise withdraw as a lump sum. As a purely hypothetical illustration, if a combined bonus of 20% applied to a $100,000 premium, the Protected Income Value would start around $120,000; the actual bonus percentage changes over time and by state, so confirm current terms before buying. You reach the Protected Income Value only through a stream of lifetime income payments after the contract has been active for a minimum of 10 years, never as a single withdrawal you could take all at once. See our Allianz 222 review for the full mechanics.

Allianz 360

A more flexible FIA that combines annual point-to-point, monthly averaging and a fixed account option inside one contract, aimed at buyers who would rather spread their index exposure across several strategies than commit to just one. Because the 360 lets you split a single deposit across more than one crediting method, it can suit someone who is not sure which single strategy will perform best over the years ahead and would rather hedge that uncertainty inside one contract.

Allianz Core Income 7

A 7-year FIA that pairs a built-in income rider with an upfront premium bonus, designed for buyers who are approaching retirement and want a guaranteed income floor established within the first decade of owning the contract. Read our Core Income 7 review for the details.

Allianz Benefit Control

An FIA with its own income rider and withdrawal benefit, built to let you draw money in retirement without fully annuitizing the contract, alongside a guaranteed minimum income benefit that sets a floor under your future payments. See our Benefit Control review.

Who is Allianz Life best for?

  • FIA buyers who want a major, globally backed carrier with genuine product variety. Allianz is a natural name to include on almost any income-focused FIA shortlist.
  • Income planners working with a 7 to 15 year deferral window, who want time to build up an income benefit base before they start taking withdrawals; both the 222 and Core Income 7 are purpose-built for this kind of planning.
  • Buyers who put real weight on a globally diversified parent company, since Allianz SE's scale and geographic reach make it one of the more financially secure parents standing behind any U.S. annuity issuer.
  • Buyers comparing premium bonus features across carriers, since several Allianz contracts include an upfront bonus that can be meaningful for someone with a shorter deferral window in mind.

Frequently asked questions

Does Allianz Life sell MYGAs?

Not through independent distribution. Allianz Life focuses on fixed index annuities rather than a standard multi-year guaranteed annuity. If a simple locked rate is what you want, compare MYGA carriers using our rate guide instead.

What was the Negrete v. Allianz Life lawsuit?

It was a California class action, brought on behalf of roughly 238,000 older Allianz Life annuity buyers, who claimed the company's bonus-annuity marketing was misleading. Allianz denied any wrongdoing but ultimately set aside $251 million to resolve the case, a settlement a federal judge signed off on in 2015. Suitability and disclosure rules for indexed annuities have tightened considerably across the industry since then, but the case remains a good reminder to read every bonus, cap and surrender term closely before you sign.

What is Allianz Life's AM Best rating?

Allianz Life holds an A+ (Superior) rating from AM Best and an AA (Very strong) rating from S&P. Ratings can change, so confirm the current grade on AM Best's site before you buy.

What annuities does Allianz Life offer?

Allianz Life's lineup centers on fixed index annuities, including the Allianz 222, Allianz 360, Core Income 7 and Benefit Control, plus variable annuities. It does not currently sell a standalone MYGA through independent agents.
